IV Sedation

Sedation Dentistry Service in Chicago, IL

The newest innovation at Millennium Park Oral Surgery is sedation dentistry, or sleep dentistry, as it is more often known. This alternative dentistry focuses on relieving stress and discomfort through sedation. Depending on the level of sedation you need, our experts have various options to help you relax.

What is Oral Surgery Sedation?

Sedation for oral surgery allows our team to use medicine to help patients relax during dental treatment. Although it is called sleep dentistry, most patients are awake during their surgery. Patients are given general anesthesia for specific and extreme circumstances. A certified individual must perform all types of sedation.

At Millennium Park Oral Surgery, we use different types of sedation. We’ll discuss your options to determine which method suits your needs best.

Inhalation Sedation

You will get sedated by wearing a face mask and inhaling a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen. These gasses do not put you to sleep but in a relaxed state of mind. After treatment is completed, you will be given pure oxygen to reduce the effects of nitrous oxide. Recovery occurs within five to ten minutes.

IV Sedation

IV sedation uses a sedative medication injected through a vein in your arm or hand. It does not put you to sleep but puts you in a less conscious and relaxed state. This method minimizes any anxiety you may feel, and you experience little to no discomfort. IV sedation makes it easier to perform multiple treatments in a single visit. However, you will not remember surgery when you wake up.

Oral Conscious Sedation

You receive an oral medication from our surgeons that will make you feel relaxed and slightly sedated. This method is more cost-effective than others, making it the most accepted option by patients.

Who Needs Sedation Dentistry?

After an assessment, anyone can take advantage of sedation dentistry. But it is beneficial for the following patients:

  • Those with dental phobia
  • Patients with a sensitive gag reflex or panic disorders
  • Patients with hypertension or heart disease
  • Patients with Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, or other disabilities

Patients undergoing surgery for impacted wisdom teeth removal may benefit from using sedation.

Who is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Millennium Park Oral Surgery will consider anyone for sedation dentistry. However, the ideal candidate is in good health without a significant medical history. Some patients who have experienced heart or lung problems may be deemed candidates after an evaluation by our surgeons.

Patients in the early stages of pregnancy or those with an allergy to the sedative are not good candidates for sedation dentistry.
