What is Oral Pathology?

Oral pathology is the study of conditions affecting the mouth. It deals with the identification and management of these diseases. Our doctors consider your overall health and body chemistry during your examination because we want to determine what affects your health so we can treat it.

We have the necessary training to detect anomalies within your mouth, head, and neck so we can manage conditions like:

  • Oral cancer
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Canker sores
  • Cold sores
  • Salivary problems
  • Fungal infections
  • Oral herpes

Oral cancer often goes undetected until the late stages of the disease. Early detection is the best defense, and our experts can diagnose pre- and cancerous conditions early to create a higher chance of successful treatment.

Changes Requiring You to Seek Help

Some changes within your mouth are normal. However, if you experience anything that concerns you, call Millennium Park Oral Surgery immediately. Some changes you may see that require attention include:

  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Sores that fail to heal
  • Pain or swelling
  • Red or white patches
  • Recurrent bleeding
  • A lump or thickening of the tissue lining the inside of the mouth

Schedule an appointment with our oral surgeons if you notice any changes in your cheeks, lips, roof of the mouth, or gum tissue. We may recommend an oral biopsy to rule out the need for surgical treatment.

Oral Pathology Treatment

Treatment for pathological conditions depends on size, location, type, and severity. We’ll perform a biopsy and test the growth or lesion to determine the results. Many samples we test are benign, but we must rule out the possibility of cancer. Whether noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant), we’ll get you on the road to recovery.

We can remove a benign tumor or growth and treat cold sores with creams and medications. If you have an oral infection, such as thrush, we’ll prescribe an antifungal medicine or mouth rinse. For patients with a cancerous diagnosis, we’ll discuss your options for surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.

Millennium Park Oral Surgeons always explain your diagnosis and allow you to ask questions. We want you to have all the necessary information to make an informed decision regarding your care.
